JEA Forester, Scott, assigning tree trimming crews to working locations
JEA Forester, Scott, assigning tree trimming crews to working locations.

In college, registered JEA Forester, Scott, wanted to be a federal game warden. He even studied criminal justice at Mississippi State. Like many college students, however, he changed his mind and decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in forestry with a concentration in wildlife management. It wasn’t until he landed a co-op near Tallahassee that he became interested in the utility forestry. During his role in this co-op, Scott learned about utility forestry. After graduating, he worked on distribution and transmission lines at Savannah Electric (today Southern Company). Fast forward about 15 years to now, and Scott is here at JEA as a forester. He works with arbor teams, does land management and assist crews. They work to ensure distribution lines are cleared, managed, and vegetation is under control and within guidelines.

Always give them (customers) an out.
— Scott

Scott says he enjoys his role because he gets to make a real difference in the community while being economical. He deals with customers face to face and is able to help solve their problems to maintain electric reliability. When asked to provide advice to incoming foresters, Scott emphasized that he highly recommends the utility industry because utility foresters are well compensated in both pay and fulfillment.
