Closed Title:Why does JEA's fuel charge fluctuate each month?
Open Text:

In December 2021, JEA started updating its fuel charge monthly instead of annually, which results in customer bills rising or falling with fuel prices. This process provides more transparency for customers and flexibility for JEA to adjust as fuel prices continue to fluctuate.

Closed Title:Will the fuel rate fluctuations continue?
Open Text:

We expect to see fuel prices remain high in 2022 and 2023 before possibly dropping in fiscal year 2024.

Closed Title:Is there a way that my bill can be more predictable each month?
Open Text:

JEA MyBudget is a levelized payment plan that evens out your monthly utility bill by taking a rolling average of your last 12 bills. The rolling average makes your utility bill payment about the same amount each month. This is a good option for customers who live on a fixed income, don't like seasonal bill fluctuations or want a more predictable utility bill from month to month.

Closed Title:Why is JEA planning to raise the electric base rate?
Open Text:

A base rate increase is needed to cover increased costs associated with Plant Vogtle, operating expenses and maintaining our credit rating.

  • Estimated capital costs for Plant Vogtle have increased by $1.3 billion since 2016.
  • With operations costs rising, an increase in revenues will allow us to maintain a resilient system for our customers.
  • A strong financial picture and good credit rating ensure that our borrowing fees are less costly.

Closed Title:When will JEA decide on the base rate increase?
Open Text:

Currently, JEA is working on a cost-of-service study to help determine the best structure for rate adjustments. The board must call for a rate hearing before increasing the base rate. That likely will be held in early 2023. If approved, the JEA board will then need to hold a vote on the rate increase.
